Email Notification Issue - Steve - Jun 9th, 2010

I have a form setup to send an email on submission. Form is submitted directly not via API. email address is good & I can even see the email template in the Test pane when I click the 'display email' button. But, when I hit the 'send test email' button I get the error 'Your test email could not be sent.", no other reasons or errors.

Enabling SwiftMailer I can send a test via the module setup, but when hitting the 'send test email' button on the form >email section of the setup it doesn't seem to do anything.

Any ideas? This is the first time I've had this not work as expected in the 6 or so installs of Form Tools I've done.

Thank you.

-Steve

Hey Steve,

Hmm, interesting... First off, is this on a different server than your other (successful) installations? Different hosting provider, or the same one?

That error will appear when the mail() function simply didn't work. Unfortunately, that function doesn't give you any clues why it failed, so we're rather in the dark.

With Swift Mailer installed, does it simply freeze - nothing happens? Or does it claim the email was sent? If the latter, try sending it to different email addresses to confirm it's not just being swallowed by a spam filter. If nothing happens, that's probably more serious...

It's odd that it displays fine. That indicates your email template doesn't contain any syntax errors, so the problem is entirely with the emailing mechanism.

Damn, I'm stumped.

Ben-

Same host as some of the other successful installs, which is why I was perplexed. I suspected that <?php mail() ?> also, but I know FT to work on this host already especially in the submission email function.

re SwiftMailer: in the SwiftMNailer Module setup I can successfully send a test to this very same email address I am using in the form and for the form test email, but from the Forms > Edit > Email > Test page, it simply does nothing when I hit the 'Send Test Email' other than the pinwheel icon going into motion for a quick moment.

Oddly, I have even used SwiftMail in my own code on this host with good success.

Normally I can figure these things out, but I seem to have run out of ideas of my own, and was hoping your deeper knowledge of FT would bring something to light that I had not thought of.

Thanks.

Ah! This sounds like it may be a problem with the email content. If there's even the smallest Smarty syntax error, it'll do that. Very poor error checking on my part - it just proved extremely difficult to detect Smarty errors so I haven't resolved that yet.

Could you post the HTML + text contents of your email template here? Just delete any text that's sensitive information. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Sure thing. There is only HTML content, no plain text, and it's:

<p>
There has been a submission made through your form, {$FORMNAME}:
</p>

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1">
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">ID</td>
<td>{$SUBMISSIONID}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">Name</td>
<td>{$ANSWER_name}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">Phone</td>
<td>{$ANSWER_number}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">Email</td>
<td>{$ANSWER_email}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">District</td>
<td>{$ANSWER_district}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">Message</td>
<td>{$ANSWER_message}</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-weight: bold">IP Address</td>
<td>{$IPADDRESS}</td>
</tr>
</table>

<p>
Submission made: {$SUBMISSIONDATE}
</p>

Hope that helps. Thanks for looking into this.

Hey Steve,

Well, it's not your email template - that looks totally fine!

I'm afraid I'm really stumped. Any chance you could hook me up with a temporary FTP account so I could log onto your server and debug the problem directly?

If so, email me at ben.keen@gmail.com with the FTP info & your FT login info.

Very odd!

RE: Email Notification Issue - kapsig431 - Feb 15th, 2011

Did you guys ever find a solution to this issue? I have the exact same problem with a form I've recently created. I've used formtools now on several of my sites and this is the first time I've ever experienced this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

I actually never got back to Ben (sorry), because I did figure it out. In my case it was my sloppiness that caused the issue.

When I setup the form I mistyped one of the input elements' name attributes, but didn't catch it until after the form was setup in FT. So, I fixed it in the FT backend after editing the front end form code. This caused the form to choke.

In my case it was an extra single quote that was added...which, as you can imagine, could really wreak havoc.

When I simply removed the form from FT and then added it again with the corrections in place everything worked as expected.

So - this was not an issue with FT.

RE: Email Notification Issue - kapsig431 - Feb 16th, 2011

Very interesting. I was able to troubleshoot a bit yesterday evening. For some reason, when I sent my test email using "Text&HTML", it always failed. When I change it to either "Text" or "HTML", it sent just fine. I have no idea what is causing it, but my emails work now.

Thanks!

@kapsig431 -

Funny, how over a year later, your post helped me to fix my issue... It seems that I was not able to receive email notifications either... It was because I opted to receive both HTML and Text Notifications, but once I chose HTML only... It worked like a charm! ;-)

Thanks again, kapsig431!
