I'm trying to understand how to use the custom fields module.

I added a custom field, and want to add custom function for validation. In the Validation tab there is a text field for custom function. I don't know if I'm supposed to write the function inside this text area (which doesn't make sense) or name a function and write that function somewhere else. If the latter, where would I write the function.

I attached a screen shot below to show where I am in the configuration.

How should write a function? Is it PHP or JS? What is sinature of it?
No documentation at all!
