I've found that this can occur if the database information is incorrect - e.g. can't connect to the hostname - or even if the $g_root_dir folder is incorrect.
Check your /global/config.php file to see if those values look okay. You might want to send over the MySQL settings in that file over to your hosting provider to ask if they look okay.

Ben, nothing changed in the installation. Config has been checked and looks alright to me (unchanged since august 2009). Is there a setting I can add, so I can debug? Or could you help me out? (It's bad for business...)
