I've downgraded from php7 to 5.6 but am now getting a mysql error:

PHP Sessions Available PASS
Write Permissions /upload/ FAIL
/themes/default/cache/ PASS
Core Field Types module available? Yes PASS
Sorry, Form Tools will not be able to run on your server. Please click here for the minimum requirements.

The minimum requirements list MQSQL 4+
I've googled the error and am stumped how to proceed. I can fix the write permissions issue but I don't have a clue about the MYSQL one.

My current info:
Server version: 5.7.16-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 - (Ubuntu)
Database client version: libmysql - mysqlnd 5.0.11-dev - 20120503 - $Id: 76b08b24596e12d4553bd41fc93cccd5bac2fe7a $
PHP version: 5.6.28-1+deb.sury.org~xenial+1
phpmyadmin: Version information: 4.5.4.1deb2ubuntu2
